Innovative LED Lighting, Done Three Ways

These innovative lighting designs take LED to playful, stylish, and even humanitarian ends.

Lamp: Balloon of Light

LED technology and classic venetian blown-glass traditions combine in Artemide’s Empatia table lamp. Designed by Carlotta de Bevilacqua and Paola di Arianello, the Victorian bell jar-like dome strikes the perfect balance between light and surface.” Recognized with an iF Product Design Award last year, the lamp’s high-performance LED glows without glare or losing its efficiency, while the dimmable glass dome remains cool to the touch. Empatia is available in three sizes and power levels.

Solar Power: Pocket Lamp

A portable solar lantern is the perfect solution for so many situations—illuminating disaster relief, a family camping trip, or even a child’s room at night. Solight Design’s Alice Min Soo Chun and Stacy Kelly were inspired by the principles of origami to create Solarpuff, a foldable plastic cube that weighs less than three ounces and can easily fit into a pocket or purse. Using a lithium-ion battery powered by a photovoltaic solar panel, the translucent puff provides up to five to eight hours of light via six LEDs with a single five-hour charge under the sun.

LED Lighting: Sharp Shadows

Artist and designer Tony Conway’s T-series lights beam with creativity. Encased within a jewel-like sculpture, the LED table lamp casts stunning patterns on surrounding surfaces when illuminated. Using waterjet technology, master metalworkers patterned the light’s geometric shapes, which were then sanded and polished by hand to a smooth and mirror-like finish. Available in solid bronze or stainless steel with cast translucent plastic, the T-series is among conway’s first forays into direct-to-consumer lighting designs.
