Call for Entries: Great Places Awards 2010

Sponsored by the Environmental Design Research Organization, in collaboration with Places: Design Observer and Metropolis, the Great Places Awards recognize professional and scholarly excellence in environmental design. Submissions are accepted in four categories: place research, place planning, place design, and book award. Red Dot Design Awards

Designers and companies are once again called upon to enter the global comparison and submit their products to the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2010. ASLA 2010 Call for Entries

Each year, the ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) Professional Awards honor the best in landscape architecture from around the globe, while the ASLA Student Awards give us a glimpse into the future of the profession. Award recipients receive featured coverage in Landscape Architecture magazine, and in many other design and construction industry media. Your Great Green Places

The National Building Museum is calling on architects, planners, landscape architects, students, and the general public to grab a video camera, or even their cell phone, and document great green places in their communities. Films should be no longer than six minutes and should investigate what works as the local neighborhood’s “Great Green Place.” Submit your video by February 15, 2010 for a chance to be selected for live screening as part of the Museum’s participation in the DC Environmental Film Festival in March 2010. http://www.vimeo.com/groups/greatgreenplaces

PlayableKids Design Competition

PlayableKids is part of the Playable 2010 International Design Competition. Kids ages 12 and under are invited to draw, paint, make collages, etc. of what fun means to them. They can also draw their favorite places. The entries will be translated by adult designers into children’s play spaces. Architizer.com announces an entirely new kind of architectural award that chooses its winner from the losing competition entries of 2009. Every year architects submit thousands of projects to competitions without receiving recognition or compensation for their work; this award is a do-over. Entries are easily uploaded to Architizer for consideration and there is no fee for submission. Entrants are only required to include three images, a text description, and credit for the entire team. Competition Competition 2010 is open to everyone who did not win a first prize. Submissions will be evaluated solely on their architectural merit, not on the criteria of the original competition for which they were created. Ceramic Tiles of Italy Design Competition

Ceramic Tiles of Italy is now accepting entries for their 17th annual design competition. The competition celebrates outstanding examples of contemporary American design featuring fabulous Italian ceramic tiles. North American architects and interior designers are invited to submit residential, commercial, and institutional projects completed between January 2005 and January 2010. Personal Infrastructures: SMIBE 2010 Short Film Competition

SMIBE welcomes moving-image stories that investigate, explore, and entertain our communities about social, environmental, political, technological, and economic issues that designers of the built world should be discussing. SMIBE invites creative professionals, college and university students from architecture, landscape, art, industrial design, interior design, motion graphics and film to produce a three-minute, engaging, and entertaining moving-image story about about memorable characters and the infrastructures in their lives. Submissions should not exceed three minutes in duration and can be produced in any motion image medium. Entry is free. Ten finalists will be chosen. http://www.smibe.org

One Prize: Mowing to Growing

How can we break the American love affair with the suburban lawn? Can green houses be incorporated in skyscrapers? Can food grow on rooftops, parking lots, building facades? The One Prize is seeking architects, urban designers, planners, engineers, scientists, artists, students, and individuals of all backgrounds to address these and other questions on creating productive green space in cities. Art in Architecture Juried Competition

The Center for Contemporary Art is announcing a juried competition, “Art in Architecture,” to celebrate its inauguration as the new art center in New Jersey, replacing the 40-year-old Somerset Art Association in the fall of 2010. “Art in Architecture” intends to generate ideas about the relationship and interaction between the two fields. The thematic goal is to seek images about architecture as a repository for art, revealing how art is expressed in architecture and how art and architecture affect and are affected by each other. This is an open competition; individuals and groups are eligible. Jurors: Michael Graves, architect; James Christen Steward, PhD., director of the Art Museum at Princeton University; and Sassona Norton, sculptor. Awards: $6,000. Western Red Cedar Architectural Design Awards

The Western Red Cedar Lumber Association (WRCLA) is calling for entries in the 2010 Western Red Cedar Architectural Design Awards program. The awards recognize innovative design using one of the world’s most unique building materials, Western Red Cedar. CIDA Announces Interior Design Education Award

The Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA) announced a new award celebrating innovative teaching and program-related practices that advance interior design education. The Innovative Interior Design Education Award competition is open to faculty members and collaborating teams at CIDA-accredited interior design programs. Call for Submissions: Artcity Festival

The Visual Arts Week Society is seeking architecture-related proposals for the 18th incarnation of Artcity Festival. We are seeking proposals for temporary architectural installations that address a township or multiple structure theme, the nomadic nature of Artcity festival, the utopian nature of outdoor rock music festivals, and/or the need for a space/structure where the public can congregate en masse, enjoy, and be challenged. http://www.artcityfestival.com
