The Gatherers: Greening Our Urban Spheres

An exhibition that brings together a diverse group of practitioners who combine art with cultural activism to explore questions of how we ensure sustainability for our growing urban populations. Since our relationship with nature varies so much from one culture or locale to the next, this exhibit provides an opportunity to explore not only the differences, but also the similarities, of their attempts to green our urban spaces. In doing so, it touches upon a broad range of interlinking matters, from environmental issues to urban spatial justice, through interactive programs, urban interventions and public dialogue. Toying With Imagination: A Plastic Camera Exhibition

In a time when digital cameras and Photoshop reign supreme, the Akron Art Museum is paying homage to the simple plastic camera. This fall the museum challenged Northeast Ohio visitors and local artists to submit photographs rivaling some of the iconic photographers featured in the museum’s collection. There was a catch– all photographs had to be taken with a plastic camera. Plastic cameras can range from a toy Barbie camera marketed to children to the trendy Diana lomographic camera, which was first manufactured in the 1960s. Far from simple, these cameras are capable of creating stunning images. Photographers can tweak the film, manipulating the color and number of exposures, a feat even easy enough for novices. Finnish Summer Homes

For some 150 years, Finnish architects have regarded the design of their own summer residence or weekend studio as one of their most important works. For them, the summer house is not only a place to spend leisure time but a chance to realize their own architectural ideals and objectives. The summer houses are experimental houses, which give the architect the opportunity to study a specific technical or structural aspect while developing spatial concepts. Wrapped In Pride: Kente Cloth

The cloth called kente, made by the Asante peoples of Ghana and the Ewe peoples of Ghana and Togo, is the best known of all African textiles. Kente’s renown has spread internationally, so that it is now one of the most admired of all fabrics. Besides its well-known use as spectacular apparel, kente also appears in many other important forms of regalia among the Asante and Ewe, including drums, shields, umbrellas, and fans. Over the past forty years the cloth has been transformed into hats, ties, bags, and many other accessories worn and used on both sides of the Atlantic. Through various media—photography, video, painting, sculpture, installation—the exhibition paints with broad features the portrait of a creative and dynamic country with which Luxembourg maintains a close relationship.
