alexandre noll & the secrets of wood

alexandre noll's artwork

Though his designs seem to have been influenced by exotic and primitive cultures, Alexandre Noll, spent his days not traveling the high seas, but working earnestly and habitually in an atelier on the outskirts of Paris. He was best-known as a sculptor, and his artwork clearly influenced his approach to furniture making.

His furniture has an organic quality that faintly echoes the designs of Gaudi. It has an unabashed earthiness that is distinctly Noll. The master made this cradle, for his granddaughter, Catherine, who herself grew up to be a woodworker.
