Fixtures and materials that make the bathroom a destination unto itself.
By Paul Makovsky
April 2002
Designers and manufacturers are continually devising ways to make the bathroom--the
temple of personal hygiene--a cleaner, more efficient, and more beautiful
space. For example, DuPont Wall Surfaces are composed of a renewable acrylic
material for shower and tub walls that is resistant to stains, mold, and
mildew; whereas Amanda Weil's photographic glass shower enclosure for Cesar
Color is purely pleasurable.
Both attitudes are encompassed by the Smart Bath from Arni Aromaa and Sauli
Suomela of Pentagon, which treats the bathroom of the future as a second
living room. In addition to being a facility for washing, their concept
lavatory is a place to play and relax.
In thinking about the future of the bathroom, Vola felt it was worth revisiting
the past. To celebrate the centennial of Danish designer Arne Jacobsen's
birth, the company reintroduced the architect's classic taps, handles, and
accessories, which were installed in landmarks such as the SAS Royal Hotel
in Copenhagen. Whether high-tech or traditional, all of these products should
result in more time spent enjoying the bathroom and less maintaining it.
