"I designed these versions of the standard so that they have a
nice presence of their own."

The days of equipping your sterile office cubicle with antiseptic
desk accessories may soon be over. New York designer Alec Drummond
has created the Petra Desk Tools, a new generation of office supplies
manufactured and sold by the Manhattan design collaborative Arcaseum.
The first two pieces--a tape dispenser and a Post-It note holder--are
made of a material called "sculpstone," formulated by Drummond.
Essentially a mixture of earth and sand, sculpstone can be molded
like concrete or plaster, without the heat required by less green
processes.
What's more, the Petra tools come in natural, earthy colors: terra-cotta,
green, and blue. (Even the rolls of tape included with the dispenser
are color-coordinated.) The finish is "buffed out," Drummond explains,
"so that the pieces have a very warm, velvety feel," and the softly
sculpted contours are reminiscent of natural forms such as stones.
As a painter, Drummond says he is particularly attuned to the
way light falls over forms. "I designed these versions of the
standard so that they have a nice presence on their own," he says.
Indeed, the beauty and functionality of the Petra tools are sure
to add warmth to any workstation.
