It used to be that architects, interior designers, and their clients chose
eco-friendly fabrics at a financial or aesthetic price. Now there's
an increasing range of green choices in terms of quality, environmental
impact, and cost.
For example, Designtex, Knoll, and Herman Miller all offer products made
from a Terratex polyester fabric manufactured through a clean process and
made entirely of postindustrial materials such as plastic soda bottles.
NatureWorks fibers from Penn Nyla and Cargill Dow, and a new fabric
from Terratex--which are derived from renewable resources like corn and
soy--are as affordable and easy to clean as polyester and other synthetics.
Their production requires 20 to 50 percent less fossil fuel and emits less
carbon dioxide than petroleum-based fibers--and they can be composted.
Climatex Lifecycle fabrics set the standard for the next generation of sustainable
textiles. They are manufactured in a process developed by McDonough Braungart
Design Chemistry that takes into account every stage in the life of a textile,
from production and use to disposal. All of the wool and ramie upholstery
fabric's by-products are biodegradable. Like nature, the system wastes nothing.
