In Georgia the faint but constant cries you hear at night over the chirping
cicadas are real. They're graphic designers bemoaning the state's new flag.
Although most are grateful to have a new banner waving above the capitol
building, there is still a sense of frustration at being represented by
something so unappealing. "I could do better," they say. And we
said, "So do it!"
Metropolis approached over a dozen designers from the Peach State and asked
them to redesign the state flag. The eight who accepted the challenge returned
ideas that not only addressed the conceptual problem of representing people
in a specific region and stepping past an egregiously racist symbol, but
also considered such pragmatic issues as production costs and reproducibility.
Feel free to cut them out and fly them in the front yard at your next family
picnic.
