A3
MANUFACTURER: Knoll
DESIGNERS: Hani Rashid & Lise Anne Couture, Asymptote
WHAT IS IT?: An office system with no right angles, A3 is entirely curvilinear. Each station includes a main work surface along with mobile storage units and overhead shelves or cabinets.
RELEASE DATE: March 2002
SPECIFICATIONS: The structure features a tentlike frame and screen, mesh surface, and power pole. Storage units are made of lightweight molded recyclable plastic. The system has some add-ons, such as a task light and visor. All accessories--including letter trays, pencil cups, and a coat hook--are anchored to the frames of the workstations to eliminate clutter.
INSPIRATION: Elements such as airplane overhead storage bins and seat backs, racing bicycles, and extreme weather tents.
SPECIAL FEATURE: Unlike existing Knoll office systems, which are only available through its showrooms and dealerships, A3 and all of its components can be planned and ordered via an Asymptote-designed Web site (www.knoll.com) beginning March 2002.
WHAT WE THINK: Clearly architectural, Asymptote's solution seamlessly integrates furniture with the environment. A3 will give Herman Miller Red a run for its money.
