Flex Time
Faced with demanding residential and workplace requirements, designers invent versatile, high-performance products.

Today it's not enough for designers to create pretty spaces. Constantly changing workplace and household needs--including more people and functions sharing smaller spaces--demand flexible solutions. For example, Bruno Mathsson's table can seat ten people at dinner then collapse to a depth of less than ten inches for compact storage. Office workers now have the ability to adjust their desks to comfortable positions using the Principle (hi) Desk System, reduce noise distractions common to the cubicle environment with Herman Miller's Quite Technology, and control multiple lighting sources centrally with Lutron's GRAFIK 7000. The following products turn environmental obstacles into user advantages.

1. FOSCARINI YET SHELF/LIGHT
Foscarini's multifunctional plastic wall fixture, designed by Studio Kairos, combines a modular shelf with a light and can be mounted in many different compositions. The Y shape distributes light evenly from a single fluorescent bulb. www.foscarini.com
2. ARTEMIDE PIPE SUSPENSION LAMP
Architects Herzog & de Meuron worked with Artemide to develop this silicone-sheathed lamp for use in a Swiss insurance company. Now available to the general public, it has an extremely flexible tubular steel structure that can be adjusted in any direction. www.artemide.com
3. LUTRON ELECTRONICS GRAFIK 7000 CENTRALIZED LIGHTING SYSTEM
Lutron's system allows lighting tasks--such as dimming, switching, operating motorized draperies and shades, and daylighting--to be seamlessly integrated. It includes comprehensive, easy-to-use energy-management features: an office worker can adjust the overhead fluorescent light from his or her computer; a building manager can monitor energy usage and peak demand for lighting. www.lutron.com
4. COLOR KINETICS ICOLOR TILE FX
The iColor Tile FX is a two-by-two-foot panel with 144 individually programmable tricolor LEDs. When tiled together the panels can produce a wide range of intricate and colorful patterns, from morphing waves and animated objects to logos and emblems. The tiles--available in December--are especially suitable for walls and ceilings. www.colorkinetics.com
5. HERMAN MILLER QUIET TECHNOLOGY
Quiet Technology is a sound-masking system that reduces the intelligibility of speech 12 to 16 feet from a workstation and can be retrofitted easily into Herman Miller Resolve System work spaces. By emitting a patented direct-field sound spectrum that matches the frequency of the human voice, the technology improves employees' ability to focus on tasks. www.hermanmiller.com; (800) 851-1196
6. PRINCIPLE (HI) DESK SYSTEM
(Hi) allows users to adjust their work surface to a comfortable ergonomic height for sitting or standing. Compatible overhead storage bins, mobile pedestals, lateral files, and under-desk CPU storage units are also available. www.pfmi.com; (715) 294-1400
7. PHILIPS MIRROR TV
This versatile LCD display (available in 17, 23, or 30 inches) is integrated into a mirror that is installed flush to the wall. It's ideal for nontraditional spaces, such as hotel bathrooms, where guests can watch news and traffic reports while brushing their teeth. It can also be used as a desktop and can be linked to a laptop with a special connector that turns the mirror into an LCD monitor. www.itv.philips.com
8. BRUNO MATHSSON MI 901 FOLDING TABLE
Mathsson's classic folding table, designed in 1935, is a versatile trestle that can expand to seat ten people comfortably. It folds to a depth of less than ten inches for storage and is available in ash, beech, oak, birch, and curly birch. www.bruno-mathsson-int.com
9. SHAW CONTRACT FLUX BROADLOOM SYSTEMS PROGRAM
Shaw's new collection allows designers to create compositions in color gradations from dark to light to dark across a carpet's width. The company also offers a coordinating modular carpet that can be integrated into the overall design. The system won this year's Best of NeoCon Gold Award in the broadloom carpet category. www.shawcontract.com
10. Boffi Case System 2.3
Piero Lissoni's design can be fully customized to fit any space or lifestyle. The modular system is composed of horizontal base units that appear to hover above the floor and vertical cabinets with side panels in stainless steel, Pral (a water-resistant, nonflammable synthetic material), or wood. The handles are hidden, keeping the aesthetic clean and minimal. www.boffisoho.com; (212) 431-8282
