When different design disciplines intersect, the results are often brand-new
ways of thinking as well as hybrid forms. Sometimes the agenda may just
be to combine two simple functions in one design, as with the prototypical
sofa bed. Now, more than ever, designers trained in one field are collaborating
with those in another, and spaces and products are finding renewed
life in alternate contexts. For example, in the past few years fashion designers
have been bringing in star architects to design their stores as a way of
energizing their brands (think Calvin Klein and John Pawson, Prada and Rem
Koolhaas, Issey Miyake and Frank Gehry). This kind of cross-pollination
brings with it new questions, be they practical or fantastic: What happens
when cars come equipped with emotional intelligence? What do you get when
car designers create a running shoe? Some of the answers can be found on
these pages.
