Apligraf, a skin substitute developed by Organogenesis, Inc., is cultured from human dermal cells (fibroblasts), and epidermal cells (keratinocytes). The fibroblasts are introduced to a collagen medium, which they inhabit and restructure.

Keratinocytes are then added on top to make the epidermis. Through exposure to air, the epidermis formsthe final protective layer. The illustration shows the formal similarities of Apligraf and human skin.
