To get 2017 off to a good start, Kickstarter has advertised the launch of several new projects created by talented and visionary individuals. One of the most hyped has been a new campaign from ADIFF, a company that creates high fashion jackets with a philanthropic undertone. Themes for other projects span from do-good endeavors to practical every-day designs to art pieces. Below are 5 innovative projects, all at different points on their timeline, that could use a little kick, and a lot of support.

ADIFF + goodgood for good: Reflective Reversible Jacket
Last day to Donate: March 6th, 2017

In light of the refugee crisis, recent Parson’s graduate Angela Luna took it upon herself to design high fashion that serves a good cause. The ADIFF jacket, part of Luna’s new line, is fashionable but also practical: one side is matte while the other is made from a highly shiny and light-reflective material. This reflectivity can illuminate the refugee who, while migrating on foot, is highly susceptible to being hit by oncoming traffic. The jacket is weatherproof, extremely durable, and even capable of carrying equipment in its many pockets. What’s more, for every jacket purchased one will be donated to a refugee.

Travel journalism is meant to be a captivating  representation of places and situations that deserve public attention, but so often these accounts are diluted for the sake of traffic or clickable headlines. Off Assignment is a multimedia project created by a team of writers, travellers, and photographers who strive to document their journeys. The website features videos, photos, travel-logues and personal prose from both the team and prospective submitters. They seek to include all the nitty-gritty details and bring travel journalism and writing to a higher standard.

Cast & Place: City of Dreams Pavilion
Last Day to Donate: March 22nd, 2017

Governor’s Island, one of New York’s many preserved park spaces, is not only home to the Governor’s Island National Monument but also a sizable amount of open spaces that have, historically, been home to several art displays. Cast & Place is the winning entry into the 2017 City of Dreams Pavilion competition, a design competition that asks its contestants to create temporary structures in the most sustainable and efficient manner, in the hopes such traits will permeate into the lifestyles of their viewers. Their motive was to find and nurture an art piece that inspires, predicts, and asks people how the future of New York could be more sustainable. Cast & Place’s project is to construct structures made entirely of recycled materials—namely 300,000 aluminum cans that are pressed, recycled and reused—to form a pavilion on Governor’s Island. The final art piece will be a spectacle for New Yorkers and outsiders alike, one which will provoke visitors to question their role in preserving our city’s environment.

The Ollie Chair: Shape-Shifting Seat
Last Day to Donate: March 28th, 2017

Weather-resistant, space-saving, and shape-shifting are only a few of the adjectives one could use to describe this anomaly of a chair. With chic wood and white painted legs, the chair is foldable—so it can become wall décor or simply sit on the sides of a café until needed. The chair can also be contorted to take up as much or little space as is required: the surface area of the both the seat and the backrest can vary to the user’s liking, simply by folding the chair in specific manners.
