Supracor Honeycomb uses the latest technology to produce a highly versatile shock-absorbing material that provides old-fashioned comfort.
By Paul Makovsky
Supracor’s flexible honeycomb is a patented cushioning material produced from revolutionary fusion-bonding technology. It was jointly invented by Curt Landi and Susan Wilson, cofounders of Supracor. More than 20 years ago they saw a need for a super-lightweight, optimum-strength product. “I wanted to produce a product without any toxic materials, such as those that are used in aerospace honeycomb,” Landi explains. “I developed a processing technology utilizing smart materials by a fusion-bonding technique without the use of toxic solvents or adhesives.” Supracor is made from advanced thermoplastic elastomers and is the only aerospace-type honeycomb that has “memory”—the ability to repeatedly return to its original shape. Marketed under the Supracor and Stimulite brands, it is used in a wide spectrum of products that require shock absorption, cushioning, or acoustic applications—from bumpers for amusement-park rides to wheelchair cushions, architectural floor tiles, and yoga mats. Supracor honeycomb doesn’t have the heat and moisture buildup found in other cushioning materials, such as gel cushions; it also withstands salt water and repeated impact, in addition to being antifungal and antibacterial. “Fluids like rain will go right through patio furniture made with this material, and you can dry yourself off on it if you’re wet,” Landi notes. “If a company wants to come out with patio furniture or use the material for some other application, we have an original equipment manufacturing (OEM) division that supplies our materials to those customers.”
