“Lighting is incredibly powerful—right up there with music and sound,” says Here There Designs founder Bill Gray. “It sets space in a powerful and subtle way.” That’s a good description of the abaca-fiber lamps Gray officially released last fall after three years of development. Their sturdy, rounded forms belie the delicacy of the shades, which filter light softly and slightly unevenly. Gray began working with abaca fiber only after abandoning attempts at parchment and hide. Cast in a unique process using water and gelatin, the shades are sustainable and 100 percent recyclable. They are used together with concrete bases and stainless steel hardware.
