Dutch designer Tord Boontje and his wife, glass artist Emma Woffenden, have collaborated to design an elegant line of decanters, vases, and tumblers made from recycled wine and beer bottles. The bottles are sculpted by cutting the glass on horizontal or diagonal planes with a diamond saw; the resulting raw edges are then sanded and polished.
Part of Artecnica’s “Design with Conscience” campaign, which employs craftsmen and artisans in third world countries, the line is produced in a Guatemalan glass shop by local residents. The tranSglass line also has been selected for the the permanent design collection at New York’s Museum of Modern America, and will be available for purchase by the end of June.
