It’s easy to forget that there is more to contemporary furniture than glass, steel tubing, and modular shapes devoid of ornamentation. A classic example of work that is decidedly modern yet unlike much that is produced today is this sipo mahogany cabinet created by Alto Artigianato del Mobile of Cantu, Italy. Part of the company’s collection of reproduced historic pieces, the cabinet was originally designed in 1876 by Edward William Godwin, a leader of the Aesthetic movement. Although the artisans who made this faithful reproduction used embossed, patinated metal instead of wood for the decorative inlay, the piece’s pure lines and utilitarian form would work well in many different types of rooms.
