A Pair’s Felt Chair

Posted May 17, 2005

The designer explains:
“Initially this chair had a flattened C-shape with a straight back. When the cardboard model accidentally dented in the center, we realized it improved the design. The chair is exactly the same on both sides and it’s quite lightweight, so it is easy to flip over. The frame is just one metal tube that curves around the outer edge of the chair. Neither of us had ever worked with this material, but it was great. We could cut it with an ordinary knife and shape it quickly. It’s strength allows the seat to hold its shape.”

The professor responds:
“The felt chairs we are showing at ICFF are the product of a two-week furniture-design workshop using industrial felt. There are new possibilities in old materials. This wool felt is ancient. In Denmark we have a tradition of making beautiful furniture in special ways, mixing the old with the new.”
