Flames of Light

The undulating red flames of Vincent Breed’s Soleil Extra light fixture evoke an octopus. The similarity is conscious, as with the piece the designer brings together two of his passions: glass blowing and scuba diving, Via a complicated, multi-step process, Breed encases particles of melted, colored glass in double layers of clear glass, forming the fixture’s seventeen 20-inch-long flames. In the center of the piece, hiding the electrical system, is a shiny ball of mouth-blown, clear glass, its interior coated in injected liquid silver. The luminous, custom-made Soleil Extra is available for approximately $7,722 through the Le Cercle Verre Web site.
