ICFF Day 4: Let There Be Light

By Julie Taraska

Posted May 17, 2005

On the final day of ICFF 2005, we take a step back to look at the wealth of lighting options on offer. Our first call of business is to speak with lighting master Ingo Maurer, who has spent nearly 40 years finding ways to illuminate our world. Maurer’s contributions to the field are also honored this year with an ICFF Editors Award for his body of work.

In the category of streamline, architectural forms, there is designer Ralph Reddig’s Horizontal Slider and Box lights—lighting sources, he explains, that people can interact with. Then, of course, there is Ivalo’s elegant L’Ale, designed by the architect William Pedersen and composed of two wings with a graceful concave connector.

But perhaps most intriguing are the idiosyncratic chandeliers and hanging lamps. Vincent Breed offers up the blazing, glass-blown Flames of Light; Lyx shows the asterisk-shaped Kristall Pendant, made with bent acrylic rods; a trio of Swedes dish up the Glasklasen Chandelier, a way to store your wine glasses and provide illumination; and Luzifer debuts its flamboyant Mikado line of fixtures, whose veneer pieces stick out like peacock feathers.
