Maira Kalman’s Stories

By Philip Berger

Posted June 16, 2005

In order to develop more figurative and iconographic fabrics for the contract industry, Maharam has collaborated with celebrated illustrator Maira Kalman, whose “NewYorkistan” closely rivals Steinberg’s “A New Yorker’s View of the World” for all-time greatest New Yorker cover. Kalman approached Maharam with a huge sheet of eccentric pictographs celebrating the everyday people, places, and objects she likes; when asked what it was, she replied, “It’s the story of my life.”  Maharam’s design staff transformed the work into an oversized repeating pattern with more than 200 hieroglyphs. “Weaving a story from the minute and the grand is my full-time occupation and delight,” says Kalman.
