Atlas of Novel Tectonics
By Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto
Designed by Reto Geiser and Donald Mak
of Research and Development
Princeton Architectural Press
255 pp., $29.95
This cerebral little manual probes some of the more esoteric aspects of architecture in pursuit of novel approaches to design. Divided into bite-size chapters containing architecture firm Reiser + Umemoto’s theoretical meditations, the book may be indigestible to some readers, but for the academically inclined the authors serve up some interesting food for thought. Complete with didactic illustrations and diagrams, the book explores how matter and force, history, material science, and the relationship between architecture and culture can inform innovative problem solving.
