Space Invaders

An onslaught of smart solutions for small residences.

By Paul Makovsky & Michael Silverberg

Posted March 14, 2007

As urban dwellers are confined to increasingly compact quarters, there is greater demand for space-saving innovations in the home. Storage solutions and efficiency appliances are two ways to make the most of small square footage. For example, the Rakks system is flexible enough to fit into almost any setting, giving you floor-to-ceiling shelving wherever you need it, while the Bellato Action wardrobe has lightweight aluminum sliding doors that can double as room dividers. The latest kitchen offerings aren’t merely practical, they’re great-looking: Boffi has reissued Joe Colombo’s 1966 complete Minikitchen on wheels; Poliform Varenna’s Young kitchen features clutter-concealing shutters in cheery colors; and at only 24 inches wide, Bosch’s refrigerator is as slim as it is sleek. The following selection of products will make even the most modest space perform grandly.
