Strap Bar

Posted May 19, 2007

If you feel like the room is moving as you walk through this year’s ICFF Bar, don’t blame the bartender. The design—by Alfred Zollinger, of New York’s Matter Practice, and eight students from Parsons the New School for Design—employs four-inch-wide industrial straps wrapped repeatedly throughout the 96-foot-long space. Stapled along the ceiling and floor, the black ribbons form a loose enclosure on two sides of the booth. Inside, they are also fastened to the furniture. “The length of the strap is always the same, so as objects get in the way, the whole piece slides over,” Zollinger says. The resulting space feels like it’s sliced into thin sections that subtly shift position, creating a pleasantly disorienting feeling—without the risk of a hangover.
