Surface Treatments

Posted May 19, 2007

What do Corian, the Freedom of Information Act, Boris Becker, and the Slurpee have in common? They all turn 40 this year. To commemorate the anniversary of Corian’s introduction to the market, DuPont Surfaces invited 40 designers to create functional table or desktop accessories out of the solid surface material. Participants include Harry Allen, Anton Nadtochi and Vera Butko, Arik Levy, and David Rockwell. “The objects had to reflect the creativity of the designers as well as highlight the design possibilities of Corian,” says Alexa Dembek, the company’s marketing manager for North America. The results are on display in the DuPont Surfaces booth—as is Light Showers, a mixed-media installation by Michael Morris and Yoshiko Sato with video images by Paul Ryan. “The installation merges art, architecture, and fabrication, and explores the way environment can shape psychology and mood,” Dembek says. And it looks cool too.
