Editor’s Pick: Self-Service

Sonja Marzoner, a student at the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, created the Self-Service floor lamp as part of the school’s surrealist House Creatures collection, which aims to forge “a subtle emotional attachment” between object and owner. Besides providing for its users’ wants (there are holes in the middle to store rolled-up magazines, and the three modular parts are easily reconfigured), Marzonera’s light also helps shape their needs: because the structure runs through a plant-stand base, it virtually demands greenery. Who knew that sustainable design could be so passive-aggressive?
