In 2005 the PIQUE[‘] architectural team of Peter Joel Jahnke and Keith Ballantyne was a runner up in the Next Generation® competition for their design to create memory over time through the dynamics of light and slowly fading colored resin in a columbarium setting. The team’s recently completed residential projects including the Vertical Patio in Seattle, WA are decidedly less ethereal. The typical flat patio was turned on its side, implanting amenities such as the dining table and the bar into a vertical wall. Through a series of hinges and pivots modularity is built in, allowing for expanded use of open area in a small footprint and inviting the participation of the user. The now finished patio was a winner of the 2005 Unbuilt Architecture Award by the Boston Society of Architects.
