Uhuru Design: Bill Hilgendorf and Jason Horvath

How many pairs of shoes or glasses do you own?

Bill: I have one pair of eyeglasses and ten pairs of shoes

Jason: I have about one pair of usable shoes and fifteen shoes I keep around my house for no reason. And I have a pair of eyeglasses that are not prescription that I wear in the shop. They make fun of me for wearing them. They’re like yours. They were free.

Think of something else that ICFF can stand for.

Bill: Everything I come up with is dirty… I Came For Fun.

Jason: I Can’t Find Furniture

If you could build a piece of furniture out of any material in the world, what would it be?

Jason: Unicorn bones.

Bill: Crystal.

What is the desktop picture on your computer?

Jason: That stupid mac one. I didn’t change it.

Bill: Mine is picture of this big Red Hook sign outside our building.

Do you sketch with a particular kind of pen or notebook?

Jason: We use those stenograph notebook graph paper that flip over the top and a black skinny sharpie marker. I like fat lines with a dot at the end.

Bill: I use the point one thickness Staedtler, the really thin one.

When did you know you wanted to be a designer?

Jason: My dad claims I knew when I was three but I don’t remember. I was like twenty-nine. I’m thirty. When we signed up for the show, I realized I wanted to be a furniture designer.

Bill: I definitely when I was really little loved to build things, and always built stuff. I guess I would say seventeen.

What’s the favorite thing you’ve seen here so far?

Jason: That’s tough. I don’t really know.

Bill: I haven’t had a chance to walk around. The Heineken beer dispenser.

If you weren’t a designer, what would you be?

Jason: A race car driver.

Bill: A professional tennis player.

What is your least favorite color?

Jason: Orange. I hate orange

Bill: Brown.

Jason. But wood’s brown.

Bill: Yeah but like the color.

Do you have a hero?

Jason: Cliché but probably my dad.

Bill: Yeah I guess I would say the same thing.
