On November 17th, Metropolis kicked off the 2009 Next Generation® Design Competition with a launch event at the New York City showroom of Herman Miller, Inc. This Next Generation® event brought together previous years’ runners-up, judges, and a very dynamic crowd from New York’s design community.
Marg Mojzak, director of Herman Miller for the Home welcomed the crowd and set the tone of the evening with a statement on how innovative design ideas are for the greater good in today’s society. She introduced Metropolis magazine editor in chief, Susan Szenasy who informed the audience of the competition focus, which urges designers practicing ten years or less to fix our energy addiction.
Szenasy went on to thank the competition sponsors who were in attendance: Tara Santangelo, Andrew Ruderman, Vinny LaPorta and David Pedreira all from ASSA ABLOY; Marc Machlovitz and Shana Ecker from Sherwin-Williams, as well as the folks from Herman Miller, Inc. who hosted the event.
Susan S. Szenasy spoke briefly on the history of the competition and called upon Eric Chan one of the judges from the 2008 competition, and President of ECCO Design. Eric shared his thoughts on the competition as whole, reinforcing its importance. Szenasy then called on past runners-up who were in attendance to discuss their experience – including Lira Luis, Andre Dettler, Jeff Jenkins, and Meta Brunzema. It was a very inspiring presentation.
Since the competition’s launch in September, over 400 readers have started the application process for the online entry at Next Generation® Web site. The 2009 Next Generation® Design Competition is sponsored by ASSA ABLOY, Herman Miller, Inc., and Sherwin-Williams.
