Hubbardton Forge Takes Honors in 2nd Annual Innovative Green Design Awards
By Alison Alexander
In Castleton, Vermont- Hubbardton Forge, an industry leader in decorative lighting, has received an honorable mention for Environmental Social Responsibility in the 2nd annual Innovative Green Design Awards (IGDA) competition, sponsored by New York House magazine.
The company’s Vortis Pendant was honored because it is domestically manufactured, beautiful in its design, accepts an energy efficient fluorescent bulb and is built to last. In presenting the award, the magazine also praised Hubbardton Forge’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and social responsibility. The June 2010 article featuring the winners states, “Hubbardton Forge utilizes sustainable manufacturing processes throughout its business; it has decreased VOC emissions and other hazardous waste by 98 percent and process water discharge by 97 percent in recent years.”
The Innovative Green Design Awards are awarded on the basis of energy efficiency, cradle-to-cradle and sustainable manufacturing, technological or design innovation and aesthetics. The panel of five judges vetted each entry and debated issues surrounding the manufacture, life cycle, innovation, usefulness, beauty and sustainability of each product.
“We are very pleased to receive this IGDA award, as it showcases many reasons that set our lighting and our company apart”, says Hubbardton Forge CEO Bob Dillon. “Social responsibility and environmental stewardship are fundamental to the way we do business. Everyone in our company is urged to consider the environmental impact of what we do and to make recommendations on how we can do things better. As a result, we’ve adopted and pioneered a number of initiatives that have made the workplace safer, dramatically reduced our use of energy and water, and reduced our environmental footprint. We are proud of our record to date and are keenly aware of our ongoing responsibility.”
Part of that responsibility is designing and developing energy efficient lighting solutions for residential and commercial customers. “The Forge” is responding with more Energy Star rated styles, an increased variety of fluorescent options and new designs featuring non-directional LED technology—all of which use less energy and save money for the consumer, while retaining the time-honored hand-forged design and quality standards that the company is known for.
