Luis Eslava Studio and the manufacturer Sancal are both based in eastern Spain—Luis Eslava in Valencia, and Sancal about 80 miles south of him, in Yecla—but it took a panel discussion on Spanish design in New York City, at the 2010 International Contemporary Furniture Fair, to get them working together. After connecting at the fair, Eslava and Sancal started discussing a collaboration: a modular sofa that, according to Eslava, “can change its aspect depending on the time of day.” Eslava and his creative partner, Lorena Sauras, came up with the aptly named Party collection, which includes several colorful, comfortable seats that encourage nontraditional sitting styles—from perching on the wide backrest to flopping on the floor with one of the removable cushions. Here, Eslava describes the key elements of one sofa from the collection, which debuted in Milan last April.
