Spiritual Comfort
By Giovanna Dunmall
When the British brand Chorus commissioned Simon Pengelly to design a chair for churches, he jumped at the opportunity. He liked the idea of creating “a mass-produced chair that possessed a ‘soul,’ making the best of the wonderful natural characteristics of wood.” The brief was demanding. The chair had to be comfortable, lightweight, sympathetic to historic interiors, non-damaging to old floors, and require minimal maintenance. “It also needed stackability to reduce storage space,” Pengelly says, “and a discreet linking mechanism to form rows. And it had to stack three at a time whilst linked, to enable the fast clearing of large numbers of chairs—a very difficult thing to design!” Theo, as the chair is called, has proven so popular since its creation last year that high stool, bench, and pew versions are now available. It is not only being used by churches across the U.K. but also by corporate headquarters, schools, and restaurants. U.S. and international distribution is around the corner.
