Let’s face it: Our lives are still full of stress. The fast-paced nature of business and a sputtering economy mean that Americans have to work harder than ever before, putting us at greater risk for cardiovascular, respiratory, and autoimmune disorders. Drugs and surgery can be expensive; prevention is less costly in the long run. It’s no surprise then, that at the intersection of design and wellness, the bathroom, spa, and hospitality sectors are thriving even during a recession.

“Wellness is often associated with water and therefore spas and bathrooms, but it is now more of a lifestyle than a specific moment or place,” says Pierre Josselin, a senior designer at the Atlanta-based Hirsh-Bedner Associates. He sees the sector’s focus returning to service and making guests feel good about themselves. “There are no big inno-vations,” he says. “It is more about enhancing each part of the journey, from arrival through preparation, to post-treatment. For the last spa we did, we had sleeping pods, not just relaxation lounges. The guest can also consult with specialists to talk about health and nutrition.”

In the products shown here, manufacturers and designers have responded to this need, so you can take some time out for yourself and live a calmer, healthier life.
