Bright Little Friend
By Brian Bruegge
When design company Artecnica asked Hlynur Atlason to create a light that would be appealing to children, Atlason looked at what proportions are associated with youth, kids’ toys, and other cute things. The Yorky lamp appears deceptively off-kilter with its large cone and two stumpy legs, but Atlason says the sturdy silicone construction keeps the lamp “balanced even though it looks off-balance.” Yorky is meant to be versatile, transforming to accommodate any scenario it might be needed for. “It’s a cute lamp that you can do whatever you want with; it doesn’t have much of a scripted use,” the designer says. “It should be your own discovery, rather than an imposed idea.” To that end, the lamp can stand up, be set on its side, or even hung as a sconce using a detachable component that fixes to the base. Because of this flexibility, Atlason says, Yorky “is like a little companion.”
