A Sturdy Resin Chair

When it comes to design, Martha Sturdy follows her gut instincts. “My work is driven by art and sculpture,” she says. “I’m a sculptor first, so concept comes first with my designs.”

Sturdy’s linear, orange resin dining chair gleaned a great deal of attention during the Fair. Indeed: the striking seat features a high back and steel legs that have been acid-treated. “I think the high back lends elegance to the piece,” Sturdy explains. As for her choice of color and materials: “Orange was a color I felt like showing,” she says, “and I’ve been working in resin since the ’70s. I just listen to what I know, because I’ve been designing for a long time.”
