Montreal-based Furni’s founders and designers, Mike Giles and Devin Barrette, grew up skateboarding together, and they’ve wryly name-checked famed boarders in their inaugural line of sleek wooden clocks and acrylic bathroom accessories. One prototype analog clock featuring a retro flip-calendar is known as the McGill, after the originator of a 540-degree half-pipe trick. Another includes a motion sensor that turns off the digital red numbers with the wave of a hand. In addition to its Hilo (high design, low price) line, the eight-month-old company is developing a relatively luxe collection called Jacob, Jones and Brown, which includes higher-end woods like mahogany and teak, and is entirely handcrafted.
