Day-Labor Station Wins Global Innovation Award

Public Architecture’s small-scale proposal was one of four projects honored by the Holcim Foundation last Sunday.

Since we wrote about Public Architecture‘s proposal for a sustainably-designed, portable day-labor station back in 2007, it’s been racking up awards: first, silver prize at last year’s regional Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction; and now the Innovation prize in the global phase of the awards. According to the architects, the station was the only small-scale project amidst a collection of master plans.

Three other projects were honored at an awards ceremony in San Francisco last Sunday. A river remediation and urban development scheme in Fez, Morocco, took the gold prize; a low-impact greenfield for a university campus in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, won silver; and a sustainable-planning proposal for a Beijing community received the bronze award.
