Regional Crafts

We would be remiss if in our discussion of localism we failed to mention craft, the noble—one might now say defiant—commitment to making things by hand in a technological world. We surveyed creative communities throughout the country (and Mexico) and found thriving pockets of craft work made in a wide range of media, from fiber and glass to clay and wood, fashioned in an array of distinctive regional styles. Each approach represents a different view of craftsmanship, but all underscore the importance of supporting local talent. And while these artisans employ traditional techniques, they produce work that is contemporary and forward-thinking.
