Smart Environments: Green Design Coast to Coast

Course# Met127
This course is AIA/CES registered for 1LU/HSW/SD.

This year’s IIDA/Metropolis Smart Environments Awards cover a range of scales, the proverbial S, M, L: a tiny organic restaurant in Washington, D.C.’s, historic Georgetown district; a lovely library in Scottsdale, Arizona; and a bright, daylit architecture office inside a mixed-use development in Seattle. All of them, however, share an approach to sustainable design that merges beauty and intelligence with a genuine concern for the environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
– Identify sustainable design moves that have particular significance in a desert region
– Discuss how historic preservation can affect the outcome of a healthy forward-looking space
– Explain how design that promotes participation aids in the mission of creating smart environments
– Compare and contrast the environmental and cultural benefits of the design three very different projects in different regions of the United States.
