This course is AIA/CES registered for 1LU.
The Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center (EMPAC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is a marvel of acoustic engineering. From the foundation to the ceiling every inch has been designed for optimum sound performance. In the article “The Improbably Act” from the January 2009 issue of Metropolis learn about the technical challenges and impeccable results at this new world-class institution.
– Explain the structural challenges to building on a steep slope
– Explain the acoustic considerations that go into pouring a foundation
– Name at least three architectural features that enhance the acoustical performance of a space
– Discuss ways that auditory considerations can enhance the visual beauty of an architectural project
