On a recent hot summer night METROPOLIS and a host of New York’s design insiders gathered at the R20thcentury gallery to celebrate the magazine’s 21st anniversary. Surrounded by the cool lines of vintage mid-twentieth century furniture, METROPOLIS staff and friends discussed the future of twenty-first century design over the evening’s official drink, the “21.” While “21” was the buzzword throughout the evening, it was METROPOLIS’ August/September “21 Great Design Ideas” issue that was truly the star of the party. Guests eagerly snapped up the complimentary copies. As Michele Caniato of Material Connexion said to our Editor-in-Chief, Susan Szenasy, “Half of our inner-office emails are, ‘Who has this month’s METROPOLIS?’”

Downstairs at the gallery, guest and staff enjoyed the “Outside”-the current exhibition curated by Evan Synderman and Lily Kane of R. Lounging on vintage Van Kepple Green chaises, party goers were “transported” to the Hamptons of the 1950s via the installation which evokes the beach houses of the ‘case-study’ era. People exhausted by the trip back in time were re-energized by a delicious array of tapas, provided by the talented chef’s of the soon to open Warren Street restaurant, Azafran.

As the streets cooled off and the party winded down, happy party goers wandered off into the night-with their “21st Anniversary” issues of METROPOLIS safely tucked under their arms.
