To see most upholstery leather today, you’d never know that it was once the hide of an animal—every mark or wrinkle is taken out through heavy processing. For its inaugural collection of leathers, textile manufacturer Maharam chose to go another route. The company selects only the best of the best hides from boutique tanneries in Italy that celebrate the nonuniform nature of the material.

To commemorate the launch, photographer Nick Ballon shot the following images of Maharam leather being processed in Italy.

Launched in November 2016, the collection comprises eight styles of leather in 100 different shades of color.

Two products are also available in the new material: the Market Tote (above), designed in collaboration with Various Projects, and the Folded Pouch, designed by Maharam Media.
