As 2018 concludes, we’re revisiting this year’s top stories: from products to drawings, buildings, controversies, and more. Enjoy the selection below, but be sure to find our other “Best of 2018” lists as they come online!

Over the last year, hospitality design has continued to expand its sphere of influence well beyond traditional hotel and restaurant typologies: this year Metropolis saw its impact on retail, the office, and even healthcare design.

Here, we selected six of our favorite projects from 2018, from a vibrant co-working space in London to Johnston Marklee’s dramatic new Knoll store in West Hollywood. Of course, we included some hospitality interiors like Herzog & de Meuron’s show-stopping Public Hotel and GamFratesi’s leafy pistachio-colored restaurant in Manila. After all, like hospitality, shouldn’t design provide a sense of escape?
