Behind the Cover – May

Why a lost master of modern architecture earned the coveted cover spot.

Why not lead with Hawaii? That’s the question I asked the staff when discussing the cover of our May issue.

There was still a bit of winter in the air, so the staff was drawn to the tropical architecture of Vladimir Ossipoff. It was just a matter of finding the right image. As I surfed through our options, I noted a horizontal shot of the Liljestrand House, featuring a Hawaiian icon—Diamond Head—in the background. Cropping it into a vertical for the cover drew the focus even tighter. We have the architecture on the left and nature on the right, framing the context in the center. Even with a small hiccup getting the final high-resolution image, the cover was ready to go out by the third day of production—a rare luxury for our production manager, Jim Goss.
